April Fools.

"I'm not sure what I'm looking for"
She said, as she walked out the door
And flipped her hair so he could see
The wonder that might never be

It made him question all along
If loving her was purely wrong
Yet, all the while she'd made him feel
That she, too, felt their love was real

He told himself, "She'll never know
As next fall cools to winter's snow
Just how important she has been."
He'd loved her more than just a friend

The letter that he wrote to her
Had, in his heart, caused quite a stir
It took him days to get it right
While he stayed up late into night

And there he stood in borrowed shoes
Where he told her the simple news:
He'd loved her, but would never show
Until the day he watched her go

A startled look upon his face
Had stolen every thoughtful grace
But not to anger did his mind
Begin to drift, and ne'er would find

His eyes, now wet with lonely tears
Tried to forget remembered years
A deep breath in, he shook his head
And carried on to face the dread

Then 'round the corner, up the stairs
And past the rows of classroom chairs
Right to his locker, number three
He never knew that next he'd see

A note – taped to his locker door
He nearly fainted to the floor
In handwriting he surely knew
Four simple words: "I love you, too"

Then standing there in sweet surprise
He heard a noise and turned his eyes
And there she was, and there she stood
The girl he thought he'd lost for good

And skipping up, she kissed his cheek
His sturdy knees, now feeling weak
As tears welled up in sorry pools
She said, embarrassed..."April fools"
